The Glasgow Parliamentary Debating Association

Founded 1876

The Glasgow Parliamentary Debating Association is a forum for political debates run in the style of the House of Commons. Membership is open to everybody who wants to take part. We meet every fortnight from about mid September to late April or early May in the Council Chamber of the City Chambers, George Square Glasgow. Meetings commence at 7.30pm and lasts about 2 hours.

We are looking to enrol new members, and to change our meetings to a Sunday afternoon, so anyone interested please contact our secretary a.s.a.p.

Our secretary, Dallas Carter has produced a newsletter entitled "THE MACE", and the December edition can be viewed here by clicking on:

The Glasgow Parliamentary Debating Association

The GPDA was established in 1876 and is a respected debating association, which has attracted many distinguished speakers over the years, as well as providing novice debaters with a friendly and good-humoured environment in which to develop the skills of persuasive and entertaining argument.

Debates take place between 7.30 pm and 9.30 pm every second Thursday during the winter months in the Glasgow City Council Chambers, in the city centre.

The House rules and standing orders are based on those of the Westminster Parliament, and members may choose to represent a political party in the debates, or may speak as independents.

Not all debates are party political, and 'private members bills' provide an opportunity to air other issues or simply to entertain the House with an offbeat analysis of some current topic.

Anyone who is interested is eligible to join. Visitors are always welcome, whether or not they decide to join. Annual fees for 2005/06 are £10.00 waged and £5.00 unwaged.
